Sad Dirty Little Angel
'Sad Dirty Little Angel' is a painting by Steven Campbell, which in my opinion expresses a sad depiction of the cruel life of an angel... Or maybe a demon.
It makes use of a lot of dark and grungy but exuberant colours to give it a dank atmosphere, which in turn all come together to make a brilliant painting. The red at the top looks like it could be blood dripping from the heavens or a blood-stained horizon. That and the green forest on the floor make me feel like the top and bottom are fighting for dominance since they are both opposite colours and very different things and that a forest is full of life but blood usually leads to death.
In my opinion the angel is obviously supposed to be the center piece with the building coming in close second in the background. I like how the angel is just floating in the air looking like he is suspended in time and cant, or maybe wont move. On the other hand such emotion emits from him because of the positioning of his hands, face and entire body. The attention to detail on the wings is very slick and smooth which give's him a very clean look.
The building at the back looks like a gigantic cathedral but at the same time a prison depending on which side you look at. Maybe this could be a sign as to what he was in a past life. He could of been a holy man and felt that the way of god was imprisoning him and that he had to cut all ties to release himself, or maybe he was originally a terrible human and is trying to cleanse his sins and forget all the terrible things he has done.
So the reason I like this piece of artwork so much is that it portrays a creature in the sky with such a simple background. But the little things in my opinion can explain its entire back story and why the mood of the picture is what it is. Even if its a dark one.
